Methyl acetate : Description And Use
:DESCRIPTION
Methyl acetate is also called acetic acid methyl ester which is often confused with aceton. It is in the form of a clear, highly flammable liquid with a pleasant smell reminiscent of some glues, and nail polish removers. Its characteristics are very similar to those of ethyl acetate. Weakly polar (lipophilic) and aprotic, it is fairly soluble in water at elevated temperatures. It is hydrolyzed at high temperatures into methanol and acetic acid (in the presence of strong aqueous acids or into acetate in the presence of a strong aqueous base). The use of Methyl acetate is for solvent in glue, paint, nail polish remover, and in organic synthesis and for extractions.
:USE
- Solvent for nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate
- Preparation of paints, lacquers, thinners, and strippers
- To manufacture artificial leathers
- Perfume industry
- Organic synthesis
